Social Work Degree Completion Programs: Admission and Field Placement

These bachelor’s routes make different parts of that transition visible: associate pathways, separate professional admission, live meetings, and local field placements. Your earlier credits need to fit the specific social work curriculum.

Compare two timelines: entry to the social work sequence and completion of the supervised placement. Louisville and UCF describe additional admission steps beyond entering the university. Cincinnati and UMass Global identify substantial field-hour requirements, while Fort Hays State describes a Kansas associate pathway. Your transfer plan should show the practice prerequisites, the professional application stage, and the agency schedule you would need to accommodate.

This shortlist includes 20 online degree offerings at 20 colleges. Compare transfer credit policies with the requirements of your chosen major. Check each program’s schedule and any laboratory, fieldwork, or campus commitments before enrolling.

How we select programs

We include programs with documented routes from previous coursework into professional social work study and clearly described field education and scheduling requirements. Each school determines admission, transfer awards, and progression through its professional curriculum.

Online Social Work Degree Programs and Transfer Credit Requirements

An Established Completion Route With Regional Field Placement

University of Cincinnati

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineDegree completion route

Cincinnati gives a returning student a defined professional sequence and a substantial agency placement. The BSW connects human behavior and generalist practice with research, assessment and supervised field learning. Its final-year placement includes 432 hours, or approximately 16 hours per week. That schedule deserves a place beside your employment hours before you enroll. For someone bringing earlier social science coursework, the useful comparison is how those classes satisfy the BSW prerequisites and prepare you for the practice sequence.

Before you apply: Request a program-specific admission review and a written prerequisite plan. Arrange time for the field placement and its seminars before choosing a full-time or part-time course schedule.

Where You Start
Transfer admission and the social work prerequisite review apply. The program evaluates earlier college coursework before entry to its professional sequence.
Transfer Credits
Up to 90 semester credits from eligible prior college coursework, subject to degree evaluation.
Degree Requirements
120 semester credits for the bachelor’s degree; the final-year field placement includes 432 hours, equivalent to 12 credits.
Study Schedule
Online classes with a final-year field placement averaging approximately 16 hours per week.
More About the Curriculum
  • Professional sequence: Human behavior, generalist practice, social work research, and field learning build toward supervised agency work.
  • Placement planning: The School of Social Work helps arrange placements connected with the student’s location and interests.
  • Field readiness: Required coursework must be completed with grades of C− or better and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 before field courses begin.
A Clear Transition Into Upper-Division Social Work

University of Louisville

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Louisville is useful when you want to see the next admissions milestone before transferring. The BSW separates lower-division study from a professional sequence with its own application, credit threshold and GPA requirement. Generalist practice, research and paired practicum courses then build the degree’s applied core. Its online program also publishes different transfer ceilings for community college and four-year coursework. Bring your records to both conversations: the university transfer evaluation and the Kent School’s review of readiness for upper-division social work.

Before you apply: Check when the upper-division application is due and which prerequisites must be complete. Include the practicum and seminar calendar in your remaining-course plan.

Where You Start
Admission to Louisville is followed by a separate upper-division BSW application. The professional sequence requires at least 45 college credits and a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Transfer Credits
Up to 60 credits from a community college or 90 from an accredited four-year college, subject to the BSW requirements.
Degree Requirements
At least 120 credits, including generalist practice, research, practicum courses, and accompanying seminars.
Study Schedule
Online coursework with supervised service learning and practicum placements.
More About the Curriculum
  • Application sequence: University admission does not guarantee admission to the upper-division social work program.
  • Practice preparation: The professional curriculum links two practicum courses with seminars, labs, and social work research.
  • Generalist preparation: The BSW curriculum addresses work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
A Published Kansas Associate-Degree Pathway

Fort Hays State University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Fort Hays State provides a specific starting point for Kansas community college students: its catalog identifies the pre-social-work systemwide transfer associate pathway. That makes the BSW worth comparing with the courses you have already completed in that route. The degree also specifies upper-division work, institutional credits and a 12-credit practicum. Its electives add choices such as grant writing and program evaluation. An employed student can use those published requirements to discuss both the academic transition and the time needed for supervised practice.

Before you apply: The BSW does not award academic credit for life or previous work experience. Have earlier academic social work courses evaluated separately, and keep the program’s GPA requirements in view.

Where You Start
Social work courses require grades of C or better. The program requires at least a 2.5 GPA in the major and overall.
Transfer Credits
The catalog identifies the Kansas pre-social-work systemwide transfer associate pathway. Social work credit is not awarded for life or previous work experience.
Degree Requirements
120 total credits, at least 45 upper-division credits, and at least 30 credits earned through Fort Hays State.
More About the Curriculum
  • Field sequence: Practicum preparation and a professional seminar accompany the 12-credit field practicum.
  • Major electives: Electives include options in grant writing, program evaluation, nonprofit organizations, and addiction-related study.
  • Statistics preparation: Elements of Statistics is the identified mathematics pathway for this degree.
An AA-Based Route With an Explicit Program Application

University of Central Florida

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineDegree completion route

UCF puts the entry point into its online BSW in concrete terms: an AA or completed general education, prerequisite progress and a separate application to the School of Social Work. That is useful if your earlier credits already cover much of the lower-division work. The remaining curriculum combines social work classes with practice meetings and agency experience. Review the 15-week semester calendar against your work schedule, then ask how the field office would arrange a placement in your region.

Before you apply: Check current state eligibility before applying. Plan for required live online meetings and in-person agency work, including travel to an approved placement.

Where You Start
An AA or completed UCF general education, at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, and at least two of four BSW prerequisites are required, plus a separate program application.
Degree Requirements
120 total credits, including 53–58 social work credits and supervised agency experience.
Study Schedule
15-week semesters; selected practice classes require live online meetings, and field experience takes place in person.
More About the Curriculum
  • Program application: The application includes a recommendation and a professional statement. University admission does not guarantee BSW admission.
  • Agency experience: UCF arranges a community agency placement in the student’s region, with additional service learning in designated courses.
  • Service learning: Designated courses require service-learning activities outside the online classroom.
Asynchronous Classes Paired With a Substantial Local Placement

University of Massachusetts Global

Bachelor of Arts in Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

UMass Global combines asynchronous academic classes with a clearly stated 400-hour supervised placement. The Social Work BA therefore offers scheduling flexibility for reading and assignments while still requiring a serious commitment to agency practice. Its admission documentation changes with the number of transferable credits, giving returning students a defined application starting point. The curriculum’s interviewing, assessment and social welfare courses also help you judge whether your previous study prepares you for professional social work methods and policy analysis.

Before you apply: Confirm state availability and discuss an approved field site before estimating your finish date. The placement hours must fit alongside employment, family responsibilities, and online assignments.

Where You Start
Applicants with 12 or more transferable credits need at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and official college transcripts. Separate documentation applies below that credit threshold.
Degree Requirements
120 total credits, with 400 supervised on-site field education hours at an approved setting.
Study Schedule
Asynchronous online classes with supervised field education in an approved local agency.
More About the Curriculum
  • Interviewing and assessment: Coursework examines communication, assessment, and the social and cultural influences on a helping relationship.
  • Social welfare: The curriculum connects poverty, discrimination, employment, and criminal justice with historical and policy contexts.
  • Policy context: Social welfare study examines how public policies and institutions affect people and communities.
Social Policy With Agency Experience

Troy University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Troy pairs social policy and human behavior with agency visits and a substantial practicum. The combination gives returning students a concrete way to compare classroom study with the practical commitments ahead. Request the transfer evaluation before planning the social work sequence, then discuss how field preparation fits your work schedule.

Before you apply: The practicum requires time in a service setting. Review the professional requirements in the state where you intend to work; completing the bachelor's and its placement does not itself award a professional license.

Where You Start
Transfer applicants can request a course-equivalency review of previous college coursework.
More About the Curriculum
  • Practicum: The BSW includes a 400-hour practicum.
  • Coursework: Study includes social policy, cultural competency, and human behavior.
  • Program Accreditation: Troy identifies the BSW as accredited by CSWE.
A Two-Semester Capstone Internship

Colorado State University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Colorado State spreads the BSW capstone internship across two semesters. That structure makes fieldwork a central planning question, especially if you need to continue working while finishing. Review your writing, psychology and development courses alongside the university core before deciding which professional courses to take first.

Before you apply: CSU warns that accepted transfer credits may not meet specific degree requirements. Ask for both the course evaluation and the internship schedule, including the hours you must reserve for an agency placement.

Where You Start
Transfer credits are evaluated against university core and BSW degree requirements.
More About the Curriculum
  • Field Experience: The capstone internship spans two semesters and at least 400 agency hours.
  • Foundations: Supporting study includes psychology, lifespan development, and writing.
  • Transfer Review: Accepted credits may fulfill electives rather than specific degree requirements.
A Defined Major and Final-Semester Practicum

Ball State University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Ball State makes the size of its professional major explicit and places the agency practicum in the final semester. Its coursework develops assessment, intervention and policy-evaluation skills across individual, family and community settings. Those requirements give you a practical framework for evaluating earlier social science or social work courses.

Before you apply: The 69-credit major is not the entire bachelor's degree. Check the university requirements and the agency placement together; state licensing rules remain separate from completing the academic program.

Where You Start
Ball State provides an online transfer application and evaluates official transcripts from previous colleges.
More About the Curriculum
  • Major Size: The social work major contains 69 credits.
  • Practicum: A final-semester practicum takes place at a social-service agency.
  • Program Accreditation: The BSW is accredited by CSWE.
Live and Asynchronous Social Work Courses

East Tennessee State University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

ETSU's BSW blends live online classes with work you complete independently. Its liberal arts foundation supports study of evidence-based practice, social problems and human rights. If you are returning with a mix of general education and social science credits, ask how those courses position you for the professional sequence.

Before you apply: Reserve time for scheduled class meetings as well as the required practicum. The separate school social work pathway adds its own preparation, so select that option deliberately rather than assuming every BSW plan includes it.

Degree Requirements
At least 120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires at least 120 credits.
  • Class Format: Courses use both synchronous and asynchronous delivery.
  • Field Experience: A practicum is required.
A Separate Application to the BSW Major

New Mexico State University-Main Campus

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

NMSU separates university transfer admission from entry to the professional BSW major. That distinction matters when estimating where you will begin: your evaluation needs to cover general education, science preparation and the major's application requirements. The curriculum then moves through practice with individuals, families, groups and communities into linked practica.

Before you apply: Include the cultural emphasis, language study and supervised practice in your remaining plan. Prior credits can support the degree without replacing the professional sequence or satisfying the major's separate admission review.

Where You Start
The BSW major requires a separate application, a 2.5 GPA, and completion of specified general education preparation.
Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: Graduation requires 120 credits, including 48 upper-division credits.
  • Practice Sequence: Practicum I and II each have linked seminars.
  • Additional Study: The plan includes a cultural emphasis and a one-year second-language requirement.
A Weekday Final-Semester Placement

Appalachian State University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

App State publishes the weekday commitment of its final internship, making this a useful option to evaluate early if employment affects your available hours. The online coursework examines human behavior and the social, economic and political forces shaping service institutions. Transfer applicants can use the university's equivalency search before advising.

Before you apply: The final placement is a substantial workweek commitment. Confirm a feasible agency arrangement and review the North Carolina professional preparation against requirements wherever you plan to practice; online classes do not make fieldwork optional.

More About the Curriculum
  • Class Format: The program combines scheduled online meetings with asynchronous coursework.
  • Placement: The final-semester internship is in person, within or near the student’s county of residence.
  • Weekly Commitment: The internship requires approximately 32 hours weekly, Monday through Friday.
Social Work Practice and Professional Boundaries

Maryville University of Saint Louis

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Maryville joins social work theory with professional boundaries, self-care and supervised experience. Its transfer review considers previously earned college coursework, including study completed years earlier. That gives returning students a useful opportunity to compare an older general education record with the current professional curriculum.

Before you apply: Plan the supervised fieldwork as part of the degree, and review professional eligibility in your intended state. The undergraduate curriculum and its practice experience do not themselves issue a license or replace later clinical preparation.

Where You Start
College applicants need a minimum 2.0 GPA; eligible previous coursework is considered for transfer.
More About the Curriculum
  • Fieldwork: The BSW includes 400 hours of supervised fieldwork.
  • Coursework: Core study addresses social justice, human behavior, ethics, and professional boundaries.
  • Program Accreditation: Maryville identifies the online BSW as CSWE-accredited.
A Two-Step Social Work Admission Process

Campbellsville University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Campbellsville separates university admission from entry to its social work program. Its curriculum approaches practice through ethics and Christian values, with coursework addressing policy, diversity and work with individuals, families and communities. Review earlier courses against the professional entry requirements before choosing an initial schedule.

Before you apply: The transfer maximum does not bypass admission to the major or its practicum. Ask when the practice sequence begins and whether the supervised placement can fit your work commitments before relying on a shortened completion estimate.

Transfer Credits
Up to 90 transfer credits.
Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 120 credits.
  • Transfer Policy: The program accepts up to 90 transfer credits.
  • Practical Work: A required supervised practicum develops the social work competencies.
Social Work With a Choice of Track

Aurora University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Aurora offers a generalist social work degree with track options and hands-on fieldwork. The eight-week course schedule can help you organize classroom study, while the supporting admission courses give the transfer evaluation a specific starting point. Compare earlier psychology and social science study with those requirements before planning the professional sequence.

Before you apply: Arrange fieldwork alongside the academic plan rather than treating the online format as coursework only. Eligibility to apply for advanced-standing graduate study after the BSW remains a separate admissions decision.

Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 120 credits.
  • Class Length: Online courses use an eight-week format.
  • Practical Learning: The program includes hands-on fieldwork.
Completion Entry With a Separate Professional Review

University of Kentucky

Bachelor of Arts in Social Work

OnlineDegree completion route

Kentucky allows students with any amount of previous college credit to pursue its BASW completion route. The more consequential checkpoint comes later, through admission to Professional Social Work. That separation is useful when comparing an incomplete college record: university entry and readiness for the professional curriculum are different questions.

Before you apply: Review the required social work and supporting courses with an advisor before estimating when you can enter the professional sequence. Ask how practice experience will be arranged; asynchronous classes alone do not describe the full preparation required.

Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BASW requires 120 credits.
  • Professional Entry: Professional program eligibility includes a 2.5 overall college GPA and specified prerequisite grades.
  • Class Format: The online program has no prescribed class meeting times.
Skills Practice and Supervised Agency Work

Walden University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

Walden combines a skills lab and case-based learning with supervised agency work. Its quarter-credit structure is important when comparing a transcript from a semester-based college. Review the approved remaining courses together with the field placement, since the practical component adds obligations beyond independent online study.

Before you apply: The practicum includes live weekly seminars and requires an approved agency and supervisor. Keep those commitments visible in your schedule, and confirm the applicable transfer policy and professional requirements before estimating completion.

Where You Start
Walden evaluates earlier coursework and publishes a transfer allowance in quarter credits.
Degree Requirements
182 quarter credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 182 quarter credits.
  • Fieldwork: Students complete 400 hours in an approved social services agency.
  • Seminar Format: The practicum includes weekly synchronous seminars.
A Regional Practicum With Online Coursework

Arizona State University Digital Immersion

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

ASU connects its online BSW with a supervised practicum in the student's region. That regional placement model gives returning students a practical question to raise alongside transfer evaluation: where can the required experience take place? The degree prepares generalist social workers to work with individuals, groups and communities.

Before you apply: The 480-hour practicum requires a substantial time commitment. ASU's professional preparation is designed around Arizona requirements; compare those with the rules in your intended state before assuming the degree satisfies its education requirements.

Degree Requirements
120 credit hours total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 120 credit hours.
  • Practicum: Students complete a supervised 480-hour practicum.
  • Placement Support: The Practicum Education Office works with students to identify a site in their geographic region.
A Part-Time Social Work Completion Sequence

Millersville University of Pennsylvania

Bachelor of Arts in Social Work

OnlineDegree completion route

Millersville designs its online BASW around previous coursework and a typically part-time sequence. The prerequisites and evening meeting requirements make it possible to ask specific scheduling questions before applying. Field education supplies the capstone experience, connecting the academic sequence with supervised social work practice.

Before you apply: This completion program excludes applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree. Confirm both prerequisite equivalencies and fieldwork arrangements, and allow for required evening sessions alongside the independent online assignments.

Where You Start
Applicants need at least 30 transferable credits, a 2.0 GPA, and the two specified social work prerequisites.
Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BASW requires 120 credits, including transferred credits.
  • Course Pattern: The program is typically completed part time with two or three courses per semester.
  • Live Sessions: Some courses require synchronous evening sessions.
A Fall-Entry Professional Sequence

University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineTransfer entry route

UA Little Rock makes both the entry point and fieldwork pattern visible in its online BSW. Eligible community college students can explore the university's 2+2 agreements, while other applicants can review their preparation with social work advising. The fall-start professional sequence is especially relevant when timing a transfer.

Before you apply: Reserve time for 16 weekly field hours during the senior year. The program's structured sequence means that arriving with enough total credits does not necessarily let you enter professional classes in any term.

Degree Requirements
120 credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 120 credits.
  • Course Sequence: Professional social work courses beyond the introductory course begin in fall.
  • Fieldwork: Senior-year field education requires 16 hours per week.
Social Work Completion With Separate GPA Standards

Indiana Wesleyan University

Bachelor of Social Work

OnlineDegree completion route

Indiana Wesleyan gives its social work completion program an explicit prior-credit threshold and separate graduation standards for the major. Its faith-based curriculum addresses social work ethics and generalist practice. Those requirements provide useful checkpoints when evaluating an older transcript or deciding which courses to complete before transfer.

Before you apply: The university arranges field placement in collaboration with the student, and supervised hours remain required. Check the full professional admission and placement process rather than treating the initial credit threshold as approval for every stage of the program.

Degree Requirements
120 semester credits total.
More About the Curriculum
  • Degree Size: The BSW requires 120 semester credits.
  • Fieldwork: The degree requires 400 supervised field experience hours.
  • Graduation Standards: Graduation requires a 2.5 cumulative GPA and at least a 2.7 GPA in major courses.

Check BSW Transfer Credits and Professional Admission Together

Louisville and UCF make the second admissions step explicit. Entering the university does not settle admission to the professional BSW sequence. Ask which transfer credits meet the BSW prerequisites and which required courses you must finish before applying to that sequence.

Ask the advisor to put the university transfer decision and the professional application on the same timeline. Identify the prerequisites still to complete, the records needed for the second application, and the next available start for the practice sequence. An associate degree or a large block of general education credit does not answer all of those questions by itself.

Fit Supervised Field Placement Into Your Completion Plan

Cincinnati describes 432 placement hours in the final year, and UMass Global requires 400 supervised on-site hours. Those are each program’s requirements, not interchangeable course credits. UCF also combines its online route with in-person agency experience and some live practice meetings.

Bring your weekly work commitments to the field-office conversation. Ask about the agency’s available hours, supervision, travel, and the seminars or assignments that accompany placement. If you want your current workplace considered, describe the proposed learning activity and ask about approval. The goal is a course and placement schedule you can actually carry out before committing to the final year.

How Does a Social Work Major Change Your Transfer Review?

The Social Work BA and BSW routes on this page prepare students through a professional social work curriculum. A human services degree can emphasize advocacy, case coordination, or agency operations through a different course plan. Compare the exact degree with your intended work and any applicable credential requirements.

If you are moving from human services, psychology, or another related major, ask which courses satisfy the social work requirements and which transfer as electives. Keep work-experience questions separate: Fort Hays State explicitly excludes life or previous work experience from academic credit in its BSW. Request an updated plan for the exact social work award before comparing the remaining terms.

Questions About Social Work Degree Completion Programs

Do Online Social Work Completion Programs Require Field Education?

These selected routes include supervised field education. Online describes the academic format; it does not remove the agency experience. Compare the placement conditions for the exact program you would enter.

Can an Associate Degree Provide Entry to a BSW Completion Route?

It depends on the degree and its prerequisites. UCF requires an AA or completed general education alongside its other admission conditions. Fort Hays State identifies a specific Kansas pre-social-work associate transfer pathway.

Can Work Experience Replace BSW Academic Requirements?

Do not count it toward the academic plan before checking the program’s policy. Fort Hays State’s BSW does not award academic credit for life or previous work experience.

Read the official guidance:
How Can I Plan Paid Work Around Social Work Placement?

Compare your employment hours with the approved agency schedule. Cincinnati describes a final-year placement averaging approximately 16 hours per week, in addition to the academic requirements. Discuss a workable plan with the field office.

Read the official guidance:
Does Completing an Online BSW Automatically Grant a License?

The degree and licensure are separate steps. UMass Global directs applicants to location-specific licensing requirements. Check the requirements for the state and role where you intend to work before choosing a program.
