Dental hygiene degree completion programs

Best Online Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Programs for 2027

A dental hygiene license cannot be earned online, so every program below starts where your career already is: you hold an RDH license and an associate degree from an accredited dental hygiene program. What changes from school to school is how much of that training counts. Oregon Tech grants 86 credits for passing the national board exam, while Wichita State asks for only 32 credit hours of new coursework.

Which Online RDH to BSDH Program Fits Your Situation

The degree pays off most outside the operatory. Wichita State points out that the Commission on Dental Accreditation now requires dental hygiene faculty to hold a baccalaureate or higher, and Oregon Tech notes that the bachelor’s degree is required for entry into master’s programs. Choose by the credits a school accepts, whether it ends in a capstone, and what it charges out of state.

Wichita State is the shortest at 32 credit hours, Oregon Tech, Northern Arizona and Texas Woman’s University count the most prior training, and Old Dominion and Texas Woman’s build in routes toward a master’s degree. St. Petersburg College, Northern Arizona and Penn College each finish with a capstone.

This shortlist includes 10 online degree offerings at 10 colleges. Compare transfer credit policies with the requirements of your chosen major. Check each program’s schedule and any laboratory, fieldwork, or campus commitments before enrolling.

How we select programs

Each program is a completion route for hygienists who already hold an associate degree and a license, with online coursework and published credit rules. The profiles record credits accepted, total degree size, any capstone or practice course, start dates and tuition where the school publishes them. The order is editorial and is not a score.

Why Your License Comes Before the Online Degree

Hands-on clinical education is what qualifies a hygienist for licensure, and that part of the profession stays in person. The online bachelor’s degree begins after it. Old Dominion requires you to be a registered dental hygienist, Penn College asks for a current license in any one state, and Oregon Tech wants a license or eligibility in the state where you live.

Several schools let you start before your associate program ends. Minnesota State Mankato and Northern Arizona admit current dental hygiene students, Texas Woman’s University offers early entry with written approval from your program director, and St. Petersburg College enrolls students from partner colleges at the same time. If you are in your final year, ask your program director how early entry would work with your clinical schedule.

How Your Associate Degree and License Become Credits

Schools treat the same training in different ways. Oregon Tech grants 86 credits for the national board exam, Northern Arizona accepts up to 64 units as a block plus up to 26 for licensure, Texas Woman’s University takes up to 90 transfer credit hours, and Penn College takes up to 47 dental hygiene credits. East Tennessee State says students can expect to need between 30 and 75 credits, and Wichita State applies up to 28 hours of retroactive credit.

Compare the credit units before the credit totals. Oregon Tech’s 186 credits are quarter credits, not the semester credits behind the 120-credit totals at other schools. Then compare residency rules: Northern Arizona, Texas Woman’s and Old Dominion each require at least 30 credits from the school, and Oregon Tech requires 45 quarter credits.

Teaching, Public Health and Corporate Roles After the Degree

The programs point toward a handful of jobs. Wichita State prepares hygienists to teach in dental hygiene programs, Northern Arizona names teaching, research, corporate employment and public health, and Old Dominion lists global health, higher education, marketing and administration.

A capstone or practice course gives you something to show an employer. St. Petersburg College ends with a 14-week capstone, Northern Arizona requires DH 474C, Penn College allows an internship inside its capstone, and Minnesota State Mankato includes oral health promotion and educational practice courses. Master’s routes are also built in: Old Dominion shares up to 12 graduate credit hours and Texas Woman’s lets graduate courses count toward its health studies degree.

Questions About Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Programs

Can You Complete a Dental Hygiene Program Online?

Only the bachelor’s degree portion. A dental hygiene license requires clinical training in person, so these programs are for hygienists who already hold a license and an associate degree. Texas Woman’s University describes its courses as non-clinical and fully online, and Old Dominion lists no clinical requirements.

Is a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene Worth It?

It depends on where you want to work. Teaching in a dental hygiene program and graduate study both call for the bachelor’s degree, since CODA requires dental hygiene faculty to hold a baccalaureate or higher, and the schools also point to public health, research, corporate and administrative roles. If you plan to stay in private-practice clinical work, the degree is optional and the cost per credit hour is worth weighing.

How Many Credits Does an RDH to BSDH Degree Take?

Most degrees total 120 credits, as at Old Dominion, Texas Woman’s and Northern Arizona, with 30 of them taken at the school. Wichita State’s program is 32 credit hours and Minnesota State Mankato’s dental hygiene courses total 32 credits. Oregon Tech counts in quarter credits and totals 186.

Do I Need My License Before Applying?

At most schools, yes. Old Dominion and Penn College require a license, Oregon Tech asks for a license or eligibility, and Minnesota State Mankato accepts a license or eligibility for licensure. Minnesota State Mankato, Northern Arizona, Texas Woman’s and St. Petersburg College also admit students who are still in their associate program.

How Long Does an Online Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Program Take?

Wichita State can be finished in as little as 15 months and Texas Woman’s in as little as a year. East Tennessee State takes at least four semesters, Old Dominion typically three to four semesters full time, and St. Petersburg College runs 24 months with one cohort. Part-time study stretches each timeline.
