Best Degree Completion Programs in North Dakota 2027

North Dakota's public colleges share one transfer system, which helps when your credits come from more than one campus. The General Education Requirements Transfer Agreement, or GERTA, lets you finish general education at any University System campus or tribal college and take it with you to another. The schools below add online bachelor's degrees you can finish from home, and several are built for adults who left before graduating.

How we ranked

Every college on every state list is scored the same way, out of 100. The measures, from most to least weight:

  • Transfer Student Completion (25%): the share of transfer students who earn a degree within eight years (IPEDS Outcome Measures).
  • Cost per Credit (20%): the online per-credit rate the school publishes, at the resident rate for in-state schools, or the federal per-credit charge when no online rate is published.
  • Transfer Credit Maximum (15%): the most transfer credit the featured degree accepts, from the school’s own policy.
  • Online Experience (15%): the share of undergraduates who study fully online (IPEDS).
  • Graduate Earnings (15%): median earnings of the school’s graduates in that field (College Scorecard).
  • School Reputation (10%): a rating of how employers regard the school’s bachelor’s degrees, made the same way for every school from its published facts.

When a measure is missing for a college, it gets the middle value for that measure, so missing data never helps a school move up.

Questions About Finishing Your Degree in North Dakota

Which School Has the Best Degree Completion Program in North Dakota?

The #1 school for degree completion in North Dakota in 2027 is Bismarck State College, because its online rate is $252 per credit for North Dakota residents (lower than 8 other colleges on this list) and its graduates earn a median $122,948 a year (the highest on this list). #2 is Valley City State University: its online rate is $247 per credit for North Dakota residents (the lowest on this list). #3 is North Dakota State University: 60% of its transfer students earn a degree within eight years (higher than 8 other colleges on this list). The order comes from transfer student graduation rates, cost per credit, transfer credit limits, online experience, graduate earnings and school reputation, weighted the same way for every state.

Will My Credits From Another North Dakota Campus Count?

Usually, yes. GERTA lets general education courses move between University System campuses, tribal colleges and one private university. Common course numbers cover hundreds of courses, and more than 1,600 articulation agreements exist within the system. Each school still reviews your transcript for your major, so ask for a transfer review first.

Can I Design My Own Major Online?

Yes. Mayville State, Bismarck State, Dickinson State, NDSU and the University of Mary all offer a university studies degree where you build a plan from the credits you have. At NDSU and Bismarck State, each area of emphasis needs at least 12 credits, including upper-division coursework.

Can Work Experience Turn Into College Credit?

It can. NDSU's portfolio option can earn up to 12 credits for work experience, life experience and professional certifications. The University of Mary accepts CLEP and DSST scores and also awards credit through a written portfolio. Ask your school how many of these credits can apply to your degree.
