A useful place to beginHow Much of Your Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Credit Can Cover
A transfer maximum is a ceiling, not a promise. Your courses still have to fit general education, the major, and electives, and most schools require a final block of credits through their own classes. Each card shows the published maximum beside the degree’s total credits, so the remaining work is visible in plain numbers.
Most programs here cap transfer credit at three quarters of the degree, which usually means 90 of 120 semester credits. A few publish a larger allowance. Programs with equal shares are listed alphabetically, so order inside a tie says nothing about quality. Read the residency rule on each card next to the maximum.
This shortlist includes 11 online degree offerings at 11 colleges. Compare transfer credit policies with the requirements of your chosen major. Check each program’s schedule and any laboratory, fieldwork, or campus commitments before enrolling.
How this list is rankedWe divide each program’s published maximum transfer credits by the total credits its degree requires, using the school’s own numbers, and order the list from the largest share to the smallest. Where a school states its maximum as a percentage, we use that percentage. Programs with equal shares appear alphabetically. The ranking does not predict how many of your credits a school will accept.

Excelsior’s online health sciences degree lets transfer credit reach 113 of its 120 credits, which suits someone who already holds a stack of college courses plus healthcare licenses or certifications. OnlineTransfer entry route

UMGC spells out two transfer ceilings for its online business administration and management degree: up to 90 credits from four-year schools or 70 from two-year schools. That clarity helps anyone who attended both kinds of college estimate where they stand. The program also admits students without a business background, so credits from another field can still fill general education and electives.
Before you apply: Half the major must be graded coursework, and exams, portfolios, and noncollegiate training do not count toward that half. At least 30 credits come through UMGC.
- Transfer Maximum and Degree Size
- Up to 90 transfer credits from four-year schools or 70 from two-year schools, subject to evaluation and degree requirements. At least 30 credits through UMGC, including half the major and 15 upper-level credits, within the 120-credit degree.
- Where You Start
- Meet UMGC's undergraduate admission requirements, including a high school diploma or approved equivalent and English proficiency. Recent college attendance affects regular or provisional admission.
Build a Plan Around Your Transfer Credits.
Organize your previous college credits in the degree planner, then take your course list and questions to a school’s transfer advisor. The school’s evaluation determines which credits count toward your degree.
Build your degree plan ↗ Why a Transfer Maximum Is Not Your Transfer Evaluation
The maximum tells you the most credit a school will apply to the degree. Your evaluation tells you which of your courses meet a requirement. Someone with 100 credits of unrelated electives can end up with less applied credit than someone with 70 credits that line up with the major.
Ask each school for a written evaluation against the exact degree on the card. Compare the credits applied to general education, the major, and electives, then count the courses left. That remaining list, not the ceiling, sets your cost and your timeline.
Community College Credits Can Have a Separate Limit
Several schools set a lower cap for credit from two-year colleges. UMGC accepts up to 90 credits from four-year schools but 70 from two-year schools. CSU Global’s 90-credit maximum includes no more than 64 community college credits, and LSU Shreveport limits two-year credit to 60. If most of your credit comes from a community college, compare using that smaller number.
Exam and prior-learning credit can carry its own limit inside the overall maximum. CSU Global, for example, caps nontraditional sources such as credit by exam at 60 credits.
Read the official guidance: Plan for the Credits You Must Take at the School
Nearly every program here requires a final block of coursework through the school itself. Franklin and Eastern Kentucky each ask for at least 30 credits at the institution, and Eastern Oregon requires at least 20 credits in the major through EOU. Those rules, plus any capstone, are the minimum work left even after a strong evaluation.
Count that residency block when you estimate cost. Multiply the credits you still need by the published tuition rate, then add fees, so the comparison reflects the classes you would actually take.

Which Online College Accepts the Most Transfer Credits on This List?+
Excelsior University ranks #1 on this list for its Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, because its published transfer maximum covers 94.2% of the degree (113 of 120 credits). The next program, Franklin University, covers 75.8% (94 of 124 credits). Your own evaluation decides what applies to you.
Can I Transfer 90 Credits Toward a Bachelor’s Degree?+
Many programs on this list allow up to 90 credits toward a 120-credit degree. Whether you reach 90 depends on how your courses fit the degree’s requirements, your grades, and any separate limit on community college or exam credit. Get a written evaluation before you count on the maximum.
Do Community College Credits Count Toward the Maximum?+
Yes, though some schools cap them below the overall maximum. UMGC accepts up to 70 credits from two-year schools, CSU Global up to 64 from community colleges, and LSU Shreveport up to 60 from two-year institutions. Check that limit if most of your credits come from a community college.
Read the official guidance: Does a Larger Transfer Allowance Make a Degree Easier?+
No. A larger allowance means more of your earlier coursework can count. The courses you take at the school keep their own standards. Franklin, for example, requires a 2.25 GPA in the major and a capstone completed at Franklin.
Read the official guidance: Are These Rankings Based on Payments From Colleges?+
No. The order comes from the published number described in the ranking method, sorted the same way for every school. Separate sponsored listings are labeled advertisements, and DegreeCompletion.com may receive compensation from them or their referrals. Sponsored placements do not change the order of this list.
